1. The marriage was based on physical chemistry.

Youa??re sharing a life together, not just a bedroom. a??Young people often put too much credence in s**,a?? says Dr. Andrea Herber, a Boston-based psychologist with The Inside Compass, a??and thata??s something they may come to regret later.a?? Intimacy is crucial, she stresses, but ita??s one of many factors in a successful bond.

Slide 3 of 21: Sometimes, a partner may have felt doubts about an impending marriage only to proceed because of a fear of conflict. a??Theya??ll say a??I didna??t know how to say no,a?? or a??I didna??t know how to let that person down,a?? a?? says Herber, leading them to feel pressured into the decision.

2. They didna??t want to disappoint their partner.

Sometimes, a partner may have felt doubts about an impending marriage only to proceed because of a fear of conflict. a??Theya??ll say a??I didna??t know how to say no,a?? or a??I didna??t know how to let that person down,a?? a?? says Herber, leading them to feel pressured into the decision.

For some, getting married can be a one-way ticket to getting out of dodge, Dr. Herber says. Whether ita??s your parenta??s basement, a college dorm, or the messy apartment you share with one too many musicians, getting hitched can be a mode of escape. But ita??s typically not a good sign when your reason for getting married doesna??t involve your spouse. And for more poor relationship decisions to avoid.

4. They married an unsupportive partner.

When getting hitched, ita??s important that both partners share an understanding of how they want their shared future to look. However, it can be challenging for young people to achieve this understanding. When youa??re young, a??you dona??t always know how to pick a partner that truly supports your dreams,a?? says Herber, a??because you havena??t fully fleshed them out yourself.a??

5. They entered a relationship that doesna??t satisfy their needs.

Lacking in self-knowledge, young people may enter into relationships that a??dona??t quite meet what they need,a?? says Raffi Bilek, a licensed couples counselor and director of the Baltimore Therapy Center. a??Because they werena??t clear enougha?? on what these needs were, he says, they dona??t a??seek it out appropriately in the first place.a??

Slide 7 of 21: Nowadays, couples are having s** a lot less often than they used to, mainly because theya??re watching Netflix or scrolling through their phones when they should be spending quality time together. But studies have shown that doing the deed on the regular strengthens the bond between you and partner (not to mention a recent study found that it also boosts your mood and sense of meaning in life). How regular you do it is up to you, but if you want a benchmark, a 2017 study that appeared in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that the average adult currently enjoys sex 54 times a year, which equates to about once a week.

6. They missed out on promiscuity.

S** with a married partner, Bilek says, a??inevitably stops being exciting several years in.a?? Still in their s**ual prime, he says, some young couples begin to feel the seven-year itch a little too soon, thinking to themselves, a?? a??maybe I shouldna??t have gotten married so early.a?? a??

7. They went through life too fast.

Marriage brings many changes: along with the ring and possible new name, it ushers in a new, more responsible, phase of life. Some young couples a??regret jumping into this stage of life they werena??t looking to get into yet,a?? according to Bilek. Unfortunately, therea??s no jumping back.

8. They lost the freedom to be spontaneous.

a??When youa??re maturing ita??s all about you, you, youa??your career, your friends, your social life,a?? says Fran Greene, a relationship coach and the author of Dating Again With Courage and Confidence and the upcoming The Secret Rules of Flirting. a??So ita??s weird,a?? she continues, a??when one night you tell your friend, a??Hey, leta??s go to dinner,a?? and then all of the sudden ita??s like, a??Oh, I have a husband at home. Maybe I need to check in and ask him? Or invite him?a??a?? For some couples, she explains, a??thata??s a rude awakening.a??

Slide 10 of 21: a??You never think in a million years your friends are based on their relationship status,a?? says Greene, a??but, often, your single friends, once you become a married, feel as if they dona??t have as much in common with you.a?? This can be especially difficult for a couple who married young, as many of their friends may still be single. All of a sudden, their inner circle has closed considerably, and they might find themselves with no choice but to repeat the same double dates over and over again just to enjoy some social interaction. a??You never think in a million years your friends are based on their relationship status,a?? says Greene, a??but, often, your single friends, once you become a married, feel as if they dona??t have as much in common with you.a?? 10. Theya??ll never find out what else is out there.

Getting married is supposed to be the be-all-end-all of relationships; do it once, and youa??re done. So when a couple gets married young, they may regret not testing the waters a bit more before settling on a partner. a??You dona??t have that much to look back on when youa??re young, to compare,a?? says Greene. Lacking knowledge on what their other options are, ita??s easy to begin wondering a??what if?a??

11. You cana??t help but drift from your partner.

For some couples that get married young, they find that as they age, they grow apart. What was once a match made in heaven becomes an example of incompatibility. Many a??havena??t fully grown, formed, or experienced enougha?? beforehand, says Dr. Herber, to be familiar with what they want as fully-developed adults.

Slide 13 of 21: For some young couples, marriage is more than they bargained for. a??They were planning to carry on with their carefree lifestyle,a?? says Bilek, a??and they regret theya??ve saddled themselves with responsibility they werena??t really ready for.a??

13. They didna??t recognize the perks of single life.

For some, the phrase a??you dona??t know what youa??ve got till ita??s gonea?? rings all too true. Having married at a tender age to avoid dating, some partners may eventually find themselves envious of their still-single friends and their ability to only look out for themselves. Even if you didna??t love your life before marriage, a??You can become jealous of what you didna??t think was that great,a?? says Greene.

14. They lost the chance to take career risks.

Getting married might mean settling down, which might mean ensuring you and your partner enjoy a steady and stable stream of income. Some partners find they a??envy their single friendsa?? job flexibility,a?? says Greene, especially if they find their current work unfulfilling.

15. They lost the chance to be in charge.

Some spouses regret giving up the chance to be independent so soon. a??Therea??s something really exciting and nice about being in charge of yourself,a?? Greene says, explaining that couples might come to wonder if theya??d given up that excitement too early.

16. They never got a chance to explore in the bedroom.

a??Some people have s***al fetishes that theya??ve hidden for a long time,a?? says Dr. Herber. At the time they got married they a??didna??t understand they could pick somebodya?? who shared their feelings, and as such miss out on a more intimate connection with their partner.

Slide 18 of 21: Surprising, right? Couples may hear about their friendsa?? love lives and a??feel like they didna??t get the chance to experience dating,a?? causing a??feelings of unhappiness and regret,a?? says psychotherapist Emily Mendez, M.S. Ed.S.

18. They didna??t get a chance to know their partner before marriage.

Young people tend to be more impulsive than their older cohorts, leading some to jump into wedding arrangements sooner than they should. a??Though it doesna??t always happen,a?? Greene says, a??I recommend to my clients that they experience all seasons with someone.a??

19. They look to their partner for happiness.

Some young couples make the mistake of getting married under the impression that doing so will cure any dissatisfaction they may be feeling in their lives. While marriage is joyful, this can be too much to ask from a relationship. a??Theya??re looking to another person to fulfill themselves and make their world okay,a?? says Dr. Herber, a??instead of looking to themselves.a??
